A poor credit score, a CCJ, or a history of missed payments does not automatically mean no. Specialist lenders assess your full situation — not just a number. Here's what you need to know.
Banks and mainstream car finance providers use automated credit scoring systems. They set a minimum threshold and reject anything below it — often without looking at the reason behind the score.
A missed payment three years ago during a difficult period, a CCJ that has since been satisfied, or simply being new to credit — all of these can trigger an automatic rejection from mainstream lenders, even if your current situation is perfectly stable.
Specialist lenders work differently. They underwrite applications manually, look at your income and employment, consider how long ago issues occurred, and make a human decision rather than a purely algorithmic one.
CCJ or Default
County Court Judgements and defaults are assessed on their age and whether they have been satisfied. Specialist lenders look beyond the entry.
Missed Payments
A history of missed payments reduces mainstream options but does not close all doors. Lenders on our panel assess the pattern and reason.
Self-Employed
Variable income is not a barrier. We work with lenders who accept bank statements and accountant evidence rather than payslips alone.
Benefits Income
Some lenders accept certain benefits as provable income. We check this against our panel on your behalf.
No Credit History
Thin file applicants — young drivers, new to the UK — can still access finance through lenders who specialise in first-time borrowers.
IVA or Bankruptcy
An active IVA or recent bankruptcy limits options significantly, but some specialist lenders will still consider applications depending on the stage.
With bad credit car finance, the interest rate offered will be higher than it would be for someone with a clean credit file. This reflects the lender's assessment of risk — but the gap is often smaller than people expect, particularly if your current financial situation is stable.
Factors that improve your position: a deposit (even a small one), a stable employment history, time at your current address, income that comfortably covers the monthly payments, and — where relevant — credit issues that are older or have been resolved.
Factors that make it harder: an active IVA, very recent missed payments, no provable income, or applying for a vehicle well beyond what your income supports.
We are not a lender. We are a free introduction service — you tell us about your situation, and we pass your enquiry to the most relevant lenders on our panel. They make their own lending decisions based on your application.
Completing our form takes around 60 seconds and does not affect your credit score. A hard search only happens if you choose to proceed with a specific lender, and they will always inform you before that stage.
There is no fee charged to you at any point. We receive a payment from lenders we introduce you to — this does not affect the rate or terms they offer you.
